A 100% compostable punnet is launched
Mushrooms are delicious, healthy and extremely versatile because of this they continue to be a firm favourite in many South African households.
Denny Mushrooms a Proudly South African company is thrilled to announce as of November 29 they will be packaging their sustainable mushrooms in 100% compostable punnets for selected Spars around the country.
As the market leader, Denny supplies roughly half the nation’s mushrooms, so this pioneering move is a massive boost for sustainable practices aimed at protecting the planet and promoting healthy living.
So exactly how are these punnets made?
The compostable punnets are made from Bagasse, which is a natural by-product of sugarcane refinement. It is the fibre that remains after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract their juice. The pulp requires minimal processing and elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleaching to turn it into a woven, high-strength paper that is biodegradable and compostable.
The packaging result is that the punnet is compostable, the shrink-wrap covering and yes it is recyclable, results in a very sustainable packaged product.
CEO of Denny Mushrooms, Ryan Cotterell, said: “Our 100% compostable punnet gives us the opportunity to lead the way and do what is right for the environment. This initiative supports the wholesome nature of our product and Denny is incredibly proud to be pioneering new ground”.
The new punnet further improves their business practices to reduce their impact on their environment. Mushrooms are not only good for you, but they’re good for the environment too.
Denny’s mushrooms are grown using waste from wheat production (straw) and chicken farming, together with a reverse osmosis water purification process. The spent substrate (compost) from the mushroom growing process is then used to return nutrients back to the soil in the agricultural sector. By taking steps to add environmentally responsible packaging as an alternative for consumers, Denny is yet closer to its brand vision of a 360° Health Cycle for the future.
Denny has been a household name for more than 40 years, producing the popular superfood which is high in protein, low in carbohydrates and packed with essential minerals, vitamins and powerful antioxidants.
